Rockhampton

A walk though town is like turning pages in a book, with heritage-listed buildings like Customs House and Criterion lining the streets. If you time your visit right you find yourself at one of Australia’s major beef selling centres, the Central Queensland Livestock Exchange, getting caught up in the thrill of a live auction.

You can’t be the beef capital without a strong food culture. Ask at the Visitor Information Centre or where you are staying where you can get a great steak. Don’t forget the Rockhampton Zoo. You can explore 70 different species of Australian animals at your own pace or through feeding experiences and tours. With free entry, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon.

If the kids still have plenty of energy head to Kershaw Gardens Play Park and Water Fun. The playground includes five levels of play for kids and adults. Climbing ropes, ladders, tunnels, three slides and swinging hammocks, a peddling monorail and don’t forget the flying fox – everyone will have fun for hours.

Cool off in the water play area or take a walk to the waterfall. The Saleyards Distillery is a decidedly adult playground. Brewing unique, high quality, small batch rum and gin, the Distillery offers tours every day by appointment.

Step back into history at the Archer Park Railway Museum. Sit on the platform of the heritage-listed former railway station and imagine how many people have bid their farewells, kissed loved ones returning home. Don’t miss the rare French Purrey steam tram that once operated back in 1909. Rockhampton offers a diverse range of accommodation from luxury hotels and resorts to campgrounds. It’s an easy place to base yourself for short trips throughout the region.

One of the most surprising aspects of Rockhampton is its stunning natural attractions. Take a stroll on the Mount Archer Canopy Walk or along the CBD section of the Fitzroy River. Or pack your own picnic hamper and find a shady spot in the 130 year-old oasis that is Rockhampton Botanic Gardens.
